A Few of My Favorite Things -

Alt TextI was smitten with this little restaurant in South Bend called Moser's Café. This Austrian café overflows with charm. It is local favorite and I understand why people come from miles away to take in the schnitzels galore.

I met with owner Werner Moser, an Austrian native, who moved to the United States in 1988 to follow his dream. He grew up in Bad Hofastein, Austria, a small town in the Austrian Alp, and his family owned a Bed and Breakfast. Werner's dream was to own a restaurant. In 1982, Werner moved to the United States and began his journey of fulfilling his dream. In 1999, Werner opened Moser's Michigan Street Cafe and Catering, then in 2006, changed the name to Moser's Austrian Café to focus on Austrian and German Cuisine.

The old brick building is filled with Austrian/German décor representing different eras. The wood flooring accented with the interior brick walls is the perfect background as the waitresses are serving in their Lederhosen and Bundhosen. Upstairs is a quaint bar area for special events and guest overflow and the front patio area is perfect for an autumn lunch outside.

Schnitzel and Stiegel are number one choices on the menu. Stiegel Beer which is an Austrian Beer is served on tap at Mosers Café. They actually are the #1 seller of Stiegel Beer (Stiegl is a pilsner imported from Salzburg, Austria) in America! Can you believe that, a restaurant in the tiny town of New Carlisle is #1! Wow Congrats!

Lets start by saying whether in a pork tenderloin sandwich or a schnitzel I love pork! It is my favorite kind of meat so ordering from Moser's menu was going to be a task in itself. Schnitzels are abound on this menu. After reading every description I decided on the BRIESCHNITIZEL. A schnitzel topped with brie, walnuts and cranberry sauce. My taste buds were on full alert. The sweetness of the cranberry sauce and earthiness of the brie and walnuts were a perfect topping to the juicy, hand-breaded, pork filet. I should mention that all Schnitzels are served with Spaetzle or German Potato Salad and Red Cabbage. The sides are really authentic Austrian/German cuisine. Their menu, of course, has more than just schnitzels, check it out here. Next time you find yourself traveling around St. Joseph County in Northern Indiana stop at Moser's Café and experience a little Austrian/German Cuisine in Indiana.
