A Scoop of History: Step Back in Time at Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor in Columbus

Some places serve ice cream. Others serve memories.

When you walk through the doors of Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor & Museum in downtown Columbus, Indiana, you're transported to a different era. One where handcrafted sodas, towering sundaes, and the sound of a century-old orchestrion create an experience unlike anywhere else in the Midwest. Since opening its doors in 1900, Zaharakos has become more than an ice cream parlor; it's one of Indiana's most treasured culinary landmarks.

Founded by Greek immigrant brothers James, Lewis, and Pete Zaharako, the business began as a confectionery before evolving into the iconic soda fountain and restaurant visitors know today. More than 125 years later, the spirit of those early days is still alive in every scoop, sundae, and smile.

The moment you step inside, your eyes are drawn to the breathtaking mahogany back bar, sparkling stained glass, marble soda fountains, and the beautifully restored 1908 Welte orchestrion that still fills the room with music. The parlor also features one of the largest public collections of pre-1900 soda fountains, making every visit feel like part meal, part museum, and part time machine.

After closing in 2006, many feared this beloved landmark would be lost forever. Thankfully, local businessman Tony Moravec purchased the property, restored the historic building and its treasured artifacts—including bringing back the original orchestrion—and reopened Zaharakos in 2009. Today, visitors can experience the same timeless charm that has made it one of America's most celebrated historic ice cream parlors.

Zaharakos' premium ice cream is made fresh on-site and served in classic sundaes, hand-dipped cones, malts, milkshakes, and old-fashioned sodas. Looking for something uniquely Hoosier? Order a refreshing Green River soda or cool off with their signature frothy Orangeade, favorites that have delighted guests for generations. If you're hungry before dessert, Zaharakos also serves a full menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, and classic comfort food. One local favorite is the legendary GOM Cheese-brr-grr, a grilled sloppy joe with melted cheese that's become as much a part of the restaurant's history as its famous ice cream.
